The Colorado Shih Tzu Maltese and Lhaso Apso Rescue (CSTMR) was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt rescue organization. We are based in Colorado and are a member of the All Breed Rescue Network (ABRN).
Our Mission
To provide Shih Tzu, Maltese, Lhasa Apso and other small dogs that are in need a new lease on life.
Where do some of the dogs come from that are in our foster network?
We care for lost, unclaimed, and relinquished dogs from shelters or owners who can no longer keep or care for their dogs.
Why do we take in dogs when they are already in a shelter?
We foster dogs from numerous shelters throughout Colorado and the Midwest that are placed by the shelters on a list for other adoptions.

Shelters
Unfortunately due to limited space or time already spent in the shelter they are placed by the shelters on the list for adoption. Many shelters contact us and we have 24 hours to respond to the shelter when they contact us.
Dogs who are from owners that can not care for their dogs any longer
Some of these dogs come from owners that due to the economy, their owners have lost the means to care for themselves or their pets.
In these cases you can understand how heart breaking it is to relinguish their family member.
Financial strains or a pets injury forces the owners to accept the fact, they can no longer care for their pets.
Good Samaritans
Individuals who have found them as stray dogs and don't want them placed in a shelter so they contact us for help to post pictures of lost dogs and help find them a good home.
Our Network of Volunteer foster homes
CSTMR brings these little dogs into our foster home network of dedicated selfless volunteers who ask for nothing in return, just a permanent home for the dogs.
Will these dogs be a good fit for my family?
During the foster care network process each foster gets to know a dog's personality, temperament, and rehabilitate the dogs to a family life when possible for placement.
It is our policy to make sure that each dog receives the following care before placement:
Is spayed or neutered
Is current on vaccinations
Is tested for heart worm
All veterinary care necessary
Is groomed
